The Cheneys were greeted with a warm welcome back to Casper on Tuesday morning. Both Dick and Lynn graduated from Natrona County High School and call Casper their hometown.
Among the attendees were Senator John Barrasso, Governor Matt Mead and NBC Chief Justice Correspondent Pete Williams.
Williams, also an NCHS gradate, was hired by Cheney as the Pentagon Spokesman when Cheney served as Secretary of Defense.
At the breakfast, one of the things that Williams spoke about was the Cheneys’ loyalty to those who lent them a hand- as well as to their hometown.
“The Cheneys did not abandon those who helped them along the way. They’ve kept on adding to their expanding network of friends and allies,” said Williams. “And they’ve never turned their backs on Casper either.”
Williams added that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney’s first campaign stop was in Casper.
The former Vice President gave credit to his home-state for many of his achievements.
“Whatever success that we’ve been able to accomplish I can attribute to a lot of things, but most especially to the folks in Wyoming and the people here in Casper,” said Cheney. “It has just been a tremendous community, a great influence on our lives and we’ve enjoyed it immensely.”
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming presented the award for Youth of the Year to Jessica Treto and presented the first Try Award to Kiana Kelly.
Lynn Cheney recognized the accomplishments of the Boys and Girls Clubs and the people in the community who have supported and encouraged Wyoming’s youth to be the best that they can be.
“I really see the Boys and Girls Club as a kind of embodiment of that spirit where people want to nurture, help and bring along those who are younger and those who have the great good fortune to be born in this wonderful place where there is such support,” said Lynn Cheney.
There were over 1,000 attendees at the breakfast to help raise money for the Boys and Girls Clubs. Some of the money raised will go to the new Susie McMurry Technology Center, which, after completion, will feature more than 50 computers and other technologies.
