For many Leukemia patients, such as Joe Arenholtz from Laramie, their only chance of survival is finding a marrow or stem cell donor. Joe is fortunate to have a sibling who is a compatible match, yet thousands of other patients depend on the Be The Match Registry to find an unrelated donor who can give them a chance at life.

Joe’s family is asking people to honor him by joining the Be The Match Registry at a donor drive this Saturday, Feb 25th at St. Laurence School from 11 am to 3 pm. If you are between the ages of 18 and 60, meet the health guidelines and are willing to donate to any patient in need, you are welcome to join the registry.

At the drive, you will need to fill out some paperwork and give either a swab of cheek cells or blood sample to be tissue-typed. The results will be used to match you to patients. There is no cost to join the registry, but they do accept donations as it takes about $100 to add someone.

If a doctor selects you as a match for a patient, you may be asked to donate cells from circulating blood (PBSC donation) or bone marrow, so it’s important to know what you’re signing up for. To see all the step of donation, click here.
