The Kimball County, Nebraska, Sheriff's Department says the armed suspects in a car theft, who were the subject of an extensive search on Tuesday and also prompted the closure of schools in the county, are believed to have left the area.

The department posted the following statement on its Facebook page Tuesday:

"We believe that after the Chevy pickup was stolen from Cheyenne County in the early morning of 10/31/2017 that the suspects have left the area. We do not know a direction of travel or a description of the suspect(s). We discontinued an active search to patrol the town's within the county to ensure the safety of the family's out and about for Halloween. We still caution to keep houses, cars, and outbuildings locked at all times and to report all suspicious activity to law enforcement.''
