University of Wyoming student David C. Schmitt, 22, a senior geology major from Casper was found dead early this morning at around at Memorial Stadium in Laramie. David's body was found in the stadium at around 6:45 AM when stadium staff discovered the body. He was a member of the UW men's swimming and diving team and well respected on campus.

UW police say it appears Schmitt fell through a narrow space at the top of the lower level of the west side of the stadium. Police say it appears that he was attempting to climb to the stadium's upper level when the accident occurred.

The previous night all entrances to the stadium were locked as normal, but in actuality this is a small deterrent for people who wish to gain access. The chain link fence is easily climbed as anyone who has been to the stadium knows.

We are shocked and saddened to learn of David's death," UW President Tom Buchanan says. "The death of a student is always tragic, but it is even more difficult to comprehend on a day when the university is celebrating a new beginning for our graduating students. We extend our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends."

David's body was released to the Albany County Coroner's Office Saturday following the accident.
