University of Wyoming Associate Professor Kate Northrop has been awarded the annual Jeannette Haien Ballard Writer’s Prize.

The $25,000 prize is awarded to young writers with proven prowess in poetry or prose.

The associate professor teaches workshops in poetry writing and serves as a mentor to Master of Fine Arts students who are completing their thesis projects.

Northrop is the author of three poetry collections:

  • Clean” (2011)
  • Things are Disappearing Here” (2007), which was a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice and a finalist for the Academy of American Poets’ James Laughlin Award.
  • Back Through Interruption” (2002),won the Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize from Kent State University Press.
