Enrollment in Wyoming’s public schools increased for the sixth consecutive year this year and exceeded 89,000 for the first time since 2001. According to data compiled by the Wyoming Education Department, there are 89,476 students enrolled in K-12 public schools in the state for the current 2011-12 school year.

The statewide student assessment exam also known as PAWS has been a continuing issue with public schools and legislative officials. The latest issues that are now coming to a head is that of conflicting views on whether the statewide exam can be used in determining the classroom performance of teachers.

The State of Wyoming will look to its own resources to boost early childhood learning and no longer pursue any federal funding. Governor Matt Mead made the announcement Tuesday, saying he had looked into the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge Grant.

Background checks may now be required  for employees working for State Superintendent of Public Education Cindy Hill. Hill is seeking to conduct background checks for every employee in her department through the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.

The Wyoming Department of Education released the settlement agreement they reached on Monday with NCS Pearson, Inc related to the administration of the 2009-2010 Proficiency Assessments for Wyoming Students (PAWS). The total value of the financial settlement is $5,125,497.

The Wyoming Department of Education is having a public comment period about possible changes to the state's content and performance standards. The comment period will last until June 15th. The content and standards are in regards to mathematics, language arts, fine and performing arts, foreign language and health education.
