The Laramie Plainsmen cross country team continued their successful season with a victory at the 4A East Conference Championships last Friday in Cheyenne.

Racing at the Prairie View Golf Course, Laramie swept the top four spots and finished with 17 points. They easily beat runner-up Cheyenne Central, who was 36 points back.

Senior Albert Steiner recorded another victory, as he won the 5K race in 15:57.09. Teammates Philip Henry, Liam McInroy and Derk Lyford were right behind Steiner. Mason Swingholm and Jordan Tangeman finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Laramie Lady Plainsmen finished runner-up with 50 points at the same meet. They came in behind conference champ Cheyenne Central, who scored 32 points.

Sophomores Abigail Whitman and Emmy Johnson took second and third place individually. Junior Allison Dodds finished eighth.

Laramie head coach Greg Schabron said he was absolutely pleased with their performance in the final tune-up before state.

“The guys got what they needed out of that, a little bit of confidence, and knowing what they have to do to make those adjustments. Girls on paper, you know what, I’m pretty happy going into state this week. It’ll take a lot of effort. They’re definitely ranked second behind Central, but based off what we’ve seen practice-wise and just their heart there, next Saturday should be fun.”

The Wyoming State Cross Country Championships are on the VA Hospital Grounds in Sheridan. Racing begins at 10:30 a.m.
