High school cross country has reached the post-season portion of their schedule, as Laramie competes in the 4A East Conference Championships Friday in Cheyenne.

Both Laramie High School teams are defending conference champions after winning the team crowns a year ago. This year’s meet is at the Prairie View Golf Course in Cheyenne Friday afternoon.

Laramie head coach Greg Schabron’s squads are coming off a weekend with no competition. He wants to see them regain their competitive edge.

“I want to make sure the kids are back in racing mode. After that off week of racing, a couple kids just want to try different strategy in a race, who they’re going to run with, and the girls need another shot at Central before we get to State; the big one.”

Schabron said they trained hard during their down week. They had a really challenging workout last Wednesday and needed a couple of days to recover. At the same time, they made adjustments, have sharpened up and got healthier in time for conference.

As for the course, Schabron says, “We’ve got a couple of slight little hills, but nothing too bad. Usually the wind is the most challenging aspect over there, but nothing that our kids aren’t accustomed to.”

Schabron added that with this being their prep race before state they are making a big deal out of it.

“Just so we can test those kids with a little bit of pressure. A lot of times they step on the line, five/six other teams there, they’re used to going to races where there’s 34 other teams, so it seems really small, and I think they’ll be fine.”

The girls’ varsity race starts at 1 p.m. followed by the boys at 1:30 p.m.

The Wyoming State Cross Country Championships are in Sheridan next Saturday, Oct. 21.

Lady Plainsmen Volleyball

The top-ranked Laramie Lady Plainsmen head on the road for both their matches this weekend.

Laramie (23-4, 8-0) has won four straight matches and swept both their opponents in their first meeting earlier this season.

The Lady Plainsmen play at Cheyenne South Thursday at 6 p.m. That’s followed by a trip to Gillette to face Thunder Basin Saturday at 2 p.m.

Laramie is back home Tuesday for Senior Night against No. 3 Cheyenne East at 6 p.m.

Lady Plainsmen Swimming and Diving

Laramie goes on the road for their final two competitions of the regular season in Gillette this weekend.

The Lady Plainsmen will be at the Gillette Pre-Invite, a non-scored meet Friday at 3 p.m., followed by the Gillette Invitational Saturday at 8 a.m. Both competitions are being held at the Campbell County Aquatics Center.

Laramie enters this weekend with 17 swimmers and divers already pre-qualified for state.

The 4A East Conference Championships are next weekend in Laramie.
