A service to celebrate the life of David Schmitt, who was a senior on the University of Wyoming swim team, will be held on Thursday, May 12 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Casper, Wyoming. Visitation hours will be held in Casper on Wednesday, May 11 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the Newcomer Funeral Home and Crematory according to a release from the university.

Schmitt died early Saturday morning following a tragic accident at War Memorial Stadium on the UW campus. He was scheduled to participate in graduation ceremonies at UW on the morning of his death and was completing his bachelor's degree in geology.

The University Athletics Department called Schmitt an outstanding student leader and swimmer in Monday's release. They also highlighted his time at UW as a team captain for the Cowboys as he helped lead the Pokes to a third-place finish at the 2011 MWC Championships. Individually, he swam to a 14-th place finish in the 200 butterfly. The year prior he finished in the Top 15 in both the 100 and 200-breastroke events. He earned Academic All-MWC honors all four years at UW and served as the President of the UW Athletic Department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee both his junior and senior seasons.

Wyoming Athletics Media Relations says the UW Athletics Department will be making bus transportation available to current and former UW student-athletes who wish to attend Thursday's service. The bus service will meet student-athletes at 7:30 AM in from of the Rochelle Athletics Complex and will depart for Casper at 8:00 AM. Student-athletes wishing to ride the bus to Casper need to contact Molly Moore at mmoore30@uwyo.edu by 3:00 PM on Wednesday, May 11.
