Cowboys Slip Past Spartans in Cali, 64-59

The Wyoming Cowboys rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit and beat the San Jose State Spartans 64-59 in California last Saturday night.

Josh Adams scored 20 points, while Larry Nance Jr. added 18 points and 13 rebounds in the Pokes fifth straight win.

Wyoming (13-2, 2-0) crafted a 13-3 run in the second half to take the lead for good. The Cowboys trailed 46-40 with 9:48 left. Then, Adams and Nance combined for 11 of the 13 points, which put UW in front, 53-49 with 4:25 remaining.

The Pokes closed it out by making ten of their last 15 free throws. Riley Grabau went 10-for-10 at the stripe and six of those came in the last two minutes to preserve the victory.

Charles Hankerson Jr. added 12 points and four assists. Wyoming shot 50 percent from the field, including 61 percent in the second half. The Cowboys went 23-30 (77%) at the line.

San Jose State (2-12, 0-2) was led by Darryl Gaynor II with 17 points. The Spartans shot 44.4 percent from the field.

The Cowboys jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. The Spartans responded with a 14-2 run for a 16-9 advantage. They held a 31-23 lead at halftime and kept their edge until Wyoming tied it on a Nance hook shot off the glass with 7:13 left.

UW is back in action Wednesday at rival Colorado State for the first edition of the Border War in basketball. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
