A bill passed second reading in the House that would include adding vocational education or fine and performing arts classes to the Hathaway Success Curriculum's requirements. In the State House of Representatives on Monday, House Bill 13 was passed by a voice vote and will have to pass a third and final reading before heading to the Senate.

The Hathaway scholarship requirement's would be modified by House Bill 13 so students could take fine and performing arts or vocational education classes instead of actual language classes such as foreign language, native language or American Sign Language.

In order to qualify for honor or performance scholarships House Bill 13 would require graduates to take two sequenced years of a second language, fine and performing arts classes or vocational-education courses. If a student demonstrates proficiency in State Standards in one of the given areas they will in turn qualify for an opportunity scholarship.

The scholarships are awarded per semester. Students are awarded $1,600 for an honor scholarship, $1,200 for performance scholarships and $800 for opportunity scholarships.
