A deputy from Converse County is missing after trying to rescue a girl from the North Platte River in Douglas. Deputy Bryan Gross entered the river at approximately 5pm Thursday night.

Deputy Gross entered the river near the Douglas Yellowstone Bridge. The bridge connects both sides of Douglas. Gross was trying to help a girl struggling in the river.

According to Undersheriff Don Schoenleber, around 30 to 40 searchers looked for Deputy Gross until sun down. Searches were conducted by aircraft as well as by boats. The searching resumed at 6am Friday.

The girl was recovered approximately  a mile down stream Thursday evening by emergency workers. Upon being recovered the girl was taken to the hospital. Searching will continue for Deputy Bryan Gross.

Flooding issues have for the most part subsided but many major rivers in the state are still flowing at very high water levels due to the long winter and record snowpack levels.
