While the collective weekend of action for Laramie High School on the basketball court wasn't great (both teams went a combined 1-3), it was overshadowed by the big upset the Plainsmen had over the top-ranked Gillette Camels Saturday at the LHS gym.

After a very disappointing loss on Friday night to the third-ranked Sheridan Broncs, the Laramie Plainsmen pulled off the big shocker of the high school hoops weekend Saturday night at the LHS gym.

Behind a well-executed game plan and going 31-of-40 at the free throw line, the Plainsmen knocked off the #1 Camels 64-57.

After five lead changes and two ties in the first quarter-and-a-half, LHS took the lead for good midway through the second and never trailed after that.  They held a 29-22 lead at halftime, built it to 41-32 after three and led by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter.  Every time Gillette cut the lead to three or four, Laramie came through with either a clutch shot or hit free throws.

Nick Mayes led LHS (6-8, 1-1) with 17 points and six rebounds.  Tate Hilgenkamp and Steve Rahel added 16 points apiece.

Gillette was paced by Taran Brown's game-high 22 points.  He was one of three Camels who scored in double figures.

It was a great bounce back game after Laramie suffered a 54-39 loss to #3 Sheridan at home Friday night.

After a few early leads, the Broncs went on an 11-0 run and never looked back.  The Plainsmen rallied in the fourth with a 17-7 run that cut the margin to eight points, at 47-39, but it was too little, too late.

Sheridan shot 51 percent for the game compared to Laramie's 26 percent.

Hilgenkamp led LHS with a game-high 16 points.

The Lady Plainsmen faced a tough road trip to open 4A East Conference play, and it proved to be just that.

Laramie (11-3, 0-2) saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end with a 67-39 loss at #1 Sheridan Friday night.

Sheridan began the game on a 17-3 run before the Lady Plainsmen rallied to within four, at 22-18.  From that point on, the Lady Broncs out-scored Laramie 45-21 the rest of the way.

Shaley Anderson led LHS with 14 points.

Saturday at third-ranked Gillette, the Lady Plainsmen saw another rally fall short.  This time they lost to the Lady Camels 52-42.

Laramie trailed 29-19 at half, but pulled within four, at 44-40, in the fourth quarter.  The Lady Plainsmen couldn't get much going down the stretch and fell by ten.

Ragen Wilson was the high scorer for the Lady Plainsmen with 15 points.

Both teams take on the Cheyenne schools in their next action coming up this weekend.

The Lady Plainsmen take on the Cheyenne East Lady T-Birds Friday night at 7:30 pm at the LHS gym.  Saturday, they head back on the road to Cheyenne and face the Central Lady Indians at 3:30 pm.

The Plainsmen look to continue their momentum Friday night at Cheyenne East.  Then they come home Saturday night against Cheyenne Central.  Game times are 7:30 pm Friday in Cheyenne and 6:00 pm Saturday in Laramie.
