Panthers End Penguins’ Home Streak – NHL Roundup For Jan. 21st
UNDATED (AP) — The Florida Panthers own the second-worst record in the NHL's Eastern Conference, but they were good enough to beat the top team in the East on Monday night.
The Pittsburgh Penguins' team-record 13-game home winning streak has ended with a 5-1 setback against the Panthers. Drew Shore registered the first two-goal game of his career to support Scott Clemmensen, who stopped 35 shots in his first start in three weeks.
Jonathan Huberdeau (HOO'-bur-doh), Dmitry Kulikov (KOO'-lih-kahv) and Shawn Matthias also scored as the Panthers beat Pittsburgh for the second time in three meetings this season.
In other NHL action:
— Barrett Jackman and Kevin Shattenkirk scored 80 seconds apart early in the second period to give St. Louis a 3-1 lead in a 4-1 verdict over the Red Wings in Detroit. Jaroslav Halak (hah-LAHK') stopped 21 shots as the Blues ended a two-game skid and won for the ninth time in 12 games.
— Joe Pavelski's second goal of the night snapped a 2-2 tie in the second period of San Jose's 3-2 win against Calgary. Antti Niemi (AN'-tee nee-EH'-mee) turned back 21 shots as the Sharks won their fourth in a row.
— Brad Marchand scored twice for the second straight day as Boston downed Los Angeles 3-2, the Bruins' 11th victory in their last 13 home games. Marchand has six goals in his last four games after scoring just 10 in his first 45 contests this season.
— Toronto has its first five-game winning streak in seven years after Jonathan Bernier (burn-YAY') stopped 39 shots in the Maple Leafs' 4-2 win at Phoenix. Phil Kessel, Jake Gardiner and Nazem Kadri (NAH'-zehm KAH'-dree) each had a goal and an assist for the winners.
— The Islanders made it nine wins in their last 12 games as Kyle Okposo (oh-POH'-soh) scored the tying goal with 2:58 left in regulation before netting the deciding shootout goal in the New York Islanders' 4-3 comeback win over Philadelphia. The Flyers led 3-1 in the third period and were in line to complete a season sweep of the Isles until Brock Nelson's goal sparked the Isles' rally.
— Roman Josi (JOH'-see) had a goal and an assist in Nashville's 4-1 victory against Dallas. Carter Hutton stopped 35 shots in helping the Predators deal the Stars their ninth loss in 10 games.
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The Washington Capitals have re-assigned goaltender Philipp Grubauer (GROO'-bow-ur) to Hershey of the AHL. The Caps have lost nine of their last 12 in their slide down the NHL standings.
