The deadliest single loss for the United States military took the life of one Navy SEAL who had family ties in Casper. When the CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down it took the lives of 30 U.S. troops, 7 Afghan commandos and an Afghan interpreter.

Petty Officer First Class Jason Workman was only 32 years old when the helicopter he was in was shot down by Taliban insurgents. Workman's grandfather Tim Workman is a veteran of World War II and hails from Casper Wyoming. His grandson Jason was a Navy SEAL who had served 7 short tours in Iraq. Petty Officer First Class Jason Workman was born in Montrose, Colorado but lived in Virginia Beach with his wife and one year old son.

In most recent news it has been confirmed that the Taliban insurgents who shot down the helicopter have been tracked down and killed. Afghanistan's top commander said that international forces were able to find where the insurgents had fled to and were able call in an airstrike that in turn killed the insurgents.

In a statement to the media Afghanistan officials said the air strike killed Taliban leader Mullah Mohibullah. The insurgent responsible for firing the rocket propelled grenadethat hit the CH-47 Chinook helicopter was also killed in the airstrike.
