There is no doubt that Americans are bulking up but thanks to a nationwide initiative, approximately 19 large restaurant chains plan to improve the quality and nutritional values of food served to America's youngsters.

Obesity and unhealthy lifestyles are issues that only seem to continue to spiral out of control. The ease of drive-thru dining and buying processed packaged food  seems suitable for the busy lifestyle of an average American, but that doesn't mean that the food your buying is always healthy for you.

A nationwide initiative calling for healthier options in children's menus has already gained the support of 19 large restaurant chains. Approximately 15,000 restaurant locations will be increasing their servings of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, Whole grains and low-fat dairy. Of course the usual burgers and fries will still be offered, but the restaurants plan on promoting healthier, and just as tasty, alternatives.

Restaurants participating in the initiative must include at least one kids menu item that contains no more than 600 calories and offer a side dish containing less than 200 calories. Some of the chains participating in the initiative that have restaurants in and around Laramie are, Burger King, Chili's, Outback Steakhouse, Denny's and The Cracker Barrel

The initiative is only one step in solving America's weight problem. Offering healthier alternatives helps, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle and staying active at a young age is key to maintaining your health as an adult.
