Wyoming head coach Mark Branch announced Wednesday that red-shirt freshman wrestler Tanner Harms will miss the remainder of the 2012-13 wrestling season due to a hamstring injury.

Harms, who began his collegiate career this season at the heavyweight spot for the Cowboys, sustained a left hamstring injury in the Reno Tournament of Champions on December 16, causing him to withdraw from the event after one match. The UW coaching and training staff waited to determine his status after Harms underwent more tests in the weeks following the tournament.

“This is really too bad for Tanner, who was progressing nicely in his first season of competition,” Branch said. “This leaves us a little thin at heavyweight. We’ll plug in (sophomore) Leland Pfeifer there now, who is coming off major surgery himself. It’s one of those unfortunate things that happen in sports.”

Harms, from Greenwood Village, Colo., had compiled a 12-6 record this season. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
