Avalanche Death in Grand Teton National Park

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Grand Teton National Park officials say an avalanche has killed a backcountry skier from Jackson.

Park officials identified him as 40-year-old Jarad Spackman. They say Spackman and a friend were ascending Apocalypse Couloir near the mouth of Death Canyon on Friday morning when Spackman was caught in an avalanche that started further up the slope.

The slide carried Spackman an estimated 1,000 feet. His friend found Spackman face down and partially buried. He began CPR before calling for help.

A helicopter retrieved Spackman's body Friday afternoon.

It was the second avalanche death in Grand Teton National Park this year. An avalanche on Survey Peak in the northern Teton Range killed a skier Jan. 27.
