WyoPreps Boys Basketball Poll Sports Some Small Changes
Two new teams and movement in all four classifications highlight this week’s WyoPreps.com Coaches and Media Boys Basketball Poll.
The new rankings released on Wednesday has no change at the top of the four classes. Both new teams are ranked fifth. The movement has teams adjusting in the middle or bottom of the top five.
Cheyenne Central, Worland, Wyoming Indian, and Upton retain the No. 1 ranking across the four classes.
In 4A, the Indians received 26 of 27 first-place votes. This is the ninth consecutive poll that Cheyenne Central is on top of. Cheyenne East remains at No. 2. The Thunderbirds received all but three second-place votes. Sheridan holds in third with all but three third-place votes. Despite a pair of losses at home, last weekend, the Thunder Basin Bolts remain fourth. The Star Valley Braves make their debut in the poll at No. 5. That pushes Kelly Walsh out. The Trojans were one of five other teams that received votes. The big game this week will be on Saturday with No. 3 Sheridan visiting No. 4 Thunder Basin.
The top four are the same in Class 3A. The Worland Warriors are the last undefeated team in the state, boys or girls. They are a unanimous choice for the top spot. Lander has a firm grip on No. 2. Wheatland and Mountain View hold at three and four. For the first time in seven weeks, the Buffalo Bison are back in the top five at No. 5. Buffalo comes off an 11-point home win over previously ranked Rawlins. The Outlaws fall from the top five. There are no ranked games in this class this week. The biggest is a southeast quadrant showdown with No. 3 Wheatland at Rawlins on Saturday. Lander and Buffalo also have road games on Saturday.
For the second straight week, the Wyoming Indian Chiefs are in the top position in Class 2A. They received 10 of the 13 first-place tallies. Rocky Mountain and Pine Bluffs hold on to second and third, respectively. After a big road win last Saturday, the Sundance Bulldogs move up to fourth this week. They beat Big Horn by 12, so that drops the Rams to No. 5. Southeast falls from the rankings but did receive votes. With no games between ranked teams, one item to watch is that the top five are all on the road on Friday night.
In Class 1A, Upton and Encampment remain the top two teams. St. Stephens moves back up to third, while after two losses on the road, one of which was in double overtime, Saratoga falls to fourth. Lingle-Ft. Laramie holds at No. 5. There are no games this week between ranked teams within the class. The fifth-ranked Doggers have a road game at Class 2A No. 3 Pine Bluffs on Saturday. Meanwhile, second-rated Encampment is on the road for three games to end their season.
