In a reminiscence, the judge wrote, "I yearn for the day where litigants seek their courts unburdened by the possibility of physical reprisal. That hope may be quixotic today."

Some plaintiffs sleep with bars over their doors.

"Plaintiffs may not levy serious accusations without standing behind them."

Some of the plaintiffs claim the local leadership pressured them to vote to admit Smith and ignored their concerns or else face retaliation.
