President Barack Obama finally made good on his 2008 campaign promise to end the war in Iraq. On Wednesday, the president was at Fort Bragg in North Carolina to welcome troops returning home from Iraq for the last time.

In a White House briefing held Friday, President Obama announced the remaining American troops in Iraq will be home by the end of the year, closing a war effort there that has killed more than 4,400 US servicepeople and wounded 32,000 more since 2003. “After nine years, America’s war in Iraq will be over,” the president said.

The White House has found the right formula to fight al Qaeda, Homeland Security and counterterrorism advisor John Brennan said.

The deadliest single loss for the United States military took the life of one Navy SEAL who had family ties in Casper. When the CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down it took the lives of 30 U.S. troops, 7 Afghan commandos and an Afghan interpreter.
