WyoPreps’ Wyoming High School Golf Preview 2024
The 2024 Wyoming High School golf season is almost here. Practice began on Monday, and the first events will start on Wednesday. It is a short six-week season that will wrap up by mid-September. Three champions return to defend their state championship won in 2023. That also means there will be three new champions this year.
2024 WYOMING HIGH SCHOOL GOLF PREVIEW
Plenty of talent is gone from the 2023-24 season, but that doesn’t mean some top-notch golf won’t be played during the new season. Class 3A will look vastly different as a pair of four-time state champions graduated. The other division that will have a new champion is 4A girls. On the other side, Savanah Peterson of Sundance and Logan Timberman of Upton are back to defend their Class 2A titles. Also returning is defending 4A boys champ Daniel Meyer of Cheyenne East.
The teams that won it all a year ago were Thermopolis, Wheatland, and Sheridan for the girls, and Upton, Riverton, and Cheyenne East for the boys.
Class 2A will finish its 2024 season at the Kendrick Golf Course in Sheridan. Class 3A has its state championships in Rawlins at Rochelle Ranch Golf Club. Finally, the 4A will conclude the 2024 season at the Valli Vu Golf Course in Afton. Those championships will be on September 20-21, 2024.
Class 2A Preview
Top Returning Girls Players = Savanah Peterson (Sundance, defending champion), Kelsie Griffin (Ten Sleep), Lilly Johnson (Thermopolis), Madison Shaffer (Thermopolis), Avery Marchant (Sundance), Hannah Steele (Wright).
Top Girls Teams = Thermopolis, Sundance.
Top Returning Boys Players = Logan Timberman (Upton, defending champion), Austin Christen (Kemmerer), Hayden Overfield (Thermopolis), Easton Lewis (Tongue River), Owen Watt (Sundance), Porter Watt (Sundance).
Top Boys Teams = Upton, Kemmerer, Sundance.
2A Breakdown = Both defending individual champions return in Peterson and Timberman. Thermopolis returns two top players who were all-state in Johnson and Shaffer off last year’s championship squad. They will be the team to beat. The Upton boys are led by Timberman, but they lost a few key seniors, which could open the door for a team with enough depth. Sundance was young last year, but are they ready to challenge the typical top tier? We will find out. There could be a dark horse or two in both divisions that play their way toward the favorite role before the state championships in Sheridan.
Class 3A Preview
Top Returning Girls Players = Maddie Brace (Douglas), Haylee Nelson (Wheatland), Kayleigh Waymire (Torrington), Molly Parker (Douglas), Macey Engle (Douglas), Addison Bettinger (Buffalo).
Top Girls Teams = Douglas and?...
Top Returning Boys Players = Riley Stoudt (Lander), Tate Nichols (Wheatland), Braxton Costello (Pinedale), Logan Hall (Cody), Sequiel Lozier (Lander), Hunter Kihn (Lander).
Top Boys Teams = Lander, Wheatland.
3A Breakdown = Gone are the two of the most dominant players in the state’s history with the graduation of Erika Cook and Parker Paxton. Who will ascend to the top? The girls’ division lost its top five finishers at last fall's state championships, plus a few others in the new reclassification model. It looks to be wide open for who moves into a favorite role. Brace from Douglas and Nelson of Wheatland could challenge for that spot in the girls' division. After that, it's more wide open and a few more names might also have a say before the season ends. Stoudt leads a solid Lander team, while both Nichols and Costello burst onto the scene last fall as freshmen. They could both move up the ladder in 2024 as sophomores. Douglas returns the most in the girls' division and Lander in the boys' division. With some top teams moving up to the next class, this division is more open compared to the other two classifications.
Class 4A Preview
Top Returning Girls Players = Shelbi Gardner (Sheridan), Camryn Wagner (Sheridan), Jordyn Horsley (Star Valley), Ceci Bruno (Jackson), Tylynn McDonald (Riverton), Anika Stanley (Riverton), Marlee Torres (Evanston), Madison Brown (Evanston).
Top Girls Teams = Sheridan, Evanston, Jackson.
Top Returning Boys Players = Ryker Lind (Evanston), Daniel Meyer (Cheyenne East, defending champion), Nash Coleman (Cheyenne East), Jackson Evans (Campbell County), Isaac Schmidt (Kelly Walsh), Carson Moniz (Laramie), Joey McNamara (Jackson), Cade Peterson (Campbell County).
Top Boys Teams = Campbell County, Cheyenne East, Evanston, Kelly Walsh.
4A Breakdown = A big question is, how will Evanston and Riverton's return to 4A impact the team and individual races? We think everyone is chasing the Sheridan girls. With two of the top players in Gardner and Wagner, the Broncs will be tough to beat. Evanston moves back into the 4A ranks and Jackson was young last year. Can either improve enough to provide a challenge? We’re not sure if anyone will. The 4A boys’ division has a lot of players that could challenge for the top. Lind might be the best player in the state. Yes, Meyer has a chance to defend his title, but even his teammate Coleman figures to be in the mix. Campbell County, led by Evans and Peterson, and Cheyenne East look to be in a hotly contested battle for the top of 4A boys. Is Evanston deep enough to contend with the Camels and T-Birds?
A lot can change from the spring through the summer and into this new fall season. Did we miss someone? I’m sure we did, but that’s our WyoPreps golf preview. Good luck on the course in the 2024 season!
