Casper Mountain Is Home To A World-Class Biathlon Club
Casper Mountain is full of surprises, offering a variety of activities, including camping, wildlife watching, hiking, biking, skiing, and a world-class biathlon club.
It amazes me the number of people that I've talked to who either haven't been up to see what Casper Mountain is all about, or haven't been there in several years. If this is the case for you, you're missing out.
One of the most surprising features of Casper Mountain is the presence of the Casper Mountain Biathlon Club. Did you know that the biathlon facility is not only world-class but was also the site of the 2023 US Biathlon National Championships? Meaning, the best-of-the-best in the world of biathlon have competed here.
Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle target shooting. It's one of the featured sports in the Winter Olympics, but it is also one of the top sports watched in all of Europe.
Former U.S. Olympian biathlete Rob Rosser was recruited to come to Casper and help build this incredible facility. Like many people, after a career of traveling, Rob has made Casper his home. He is one of the driving forces behind the facility, helping those interested in becoming a biathlete get started.
The skills required for success in biathlon include strong Nordic skiing abilities and high-precision shooting skills, both of which must be performed under physical and mental pressure. To gain those abilities, you need to have access to facilities to build your skillset.
The Casper Mountain Biathlon Club was built for just that reason. At 7,900 feet in elevation, it's the perfect height for providing athletes with the necessary resources to train and enhance their skills all year long, even when there's no snow on the ground.
The CMBC is a member of the U.S. Biathlon Association and features over 4 kilometers of paved trails, making it perfect for roller-skiing, cycling, running, and strength training during the warm weather months. An additional 20 km of cross-country ski trails that connect with the Nordic area trails near the slash pile. When you include the state-of-the-art 30-point Olympic Standard .22 rifle range, it's a biathlon athlete's dream.
The facilities are available for use by everyone, whether you're a skilled biathlon athlete, just starting, or someone who wants to get their heart rate up. There are biathlon and Nordic skiing programs available for people of all ages and skill levels, ranging from beginners to accomplished athletes.
There's a $25 annual membership fee and a $15 day-use fee to use the shooting range. You need a Natrona County Trails pass to use the trails.
I had a chance to sit down and chat with Casper Mounatin Biathlon Club's Rob Rosser to hear more about the history and what's offered at the facility.
