In 2024, a Wyoming man was labeled "wolf killer" when he killed and tortured a wolf, causing global outrage. It's a new year, and a new Wyoming animal torture case has come to light.

The Albany County Sheriff's Office has reported that they received a report on August 18, 2025, of alleged animal cruelty at the Wild Horse Ranch.

The report stated that an individual used an ATV to run into a horse, causing it to fall. When the horse was able to get back on its feet, the individual ran into it a second time. The horse suffered extreme injuries and suffering, and the owner of the Wild Horse Herd decided to put the animal down.

Deputies responded as soon as the report was filed and arrested Stuart Schmidt and charged him with Felony Cruelty to animals for his connection to this incident. This crime is punishable by possible prison time and a fine of up to $5,000, or both.

Schmidt was released on August 20 on $1,000 singnature bond with the condition that he wouldn't have any contact with the horse's owner.

This week, Schmidt waived his right to a preliminary hearing, and the case is going to the District Court.

The Albany County Sheriff's Office released the following statement via Facebook:

Our office takes crimes against animals very seriously. We are committed to seeking justice in this case and will continue to hold individuals accountable who engage in such acts of violence.

We want to acknowledge the distress this has caused the community, and our thoughts are with those who witnessed this tragic event. The Albany County Sheriff’s Office remains dedicated to protecting the welfare of both people and animals in our county.
This investigation remains active. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Please remember, all charges are merely accusations, and all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
