Following the recent violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, there has been a movement to remove many public monuments honoring Confederate soldiers.

Did you know there is a memorial to a Confederate Civil War veteran here in Wyoming?

Before he arrived at Fort Laramie in 1867, John C. Hunton served in Virginia's 7th Infantry and helped lead Pickett's Charge in the Battle of Gettysburg.

After the war, Hunton moved west and eventually became a wealthy cattle baron. His ranch along the Chugwater Creek was one of the largest in Platte County.

While working as the post trader at Fort Laramie, Hunton became an expert on Indian relations and was later elected as the first president of the Wyoming Pioneer Association.

Following his death in 1928, at the age of 89, Hunton was laid to rest at the Lakeview Cemetery in Cheyenne. In 2010, the United Daughters of the Confederacy added a Confederate marker to his grave. It is the only public memorial to a Confederate soldier in Wyoming.
