Wyoming Legislative Panel Recommends Collecting Gross Sales Data
BUFFALO, Wyo. (AP) — The Interim Joint Revenue Committee has recommended a proposal requesting the secretary of state's office begin collecting gross sales data from corporations filing annual reports in Wyoming.
GOP state Rep. Jerry Obermueller of Casper offered the proposal to find out how much business is being done by out-of-state companies that don't currently pay state taxes.
Without a personal or corporate income tax and with some of the lowest sales and property taxes in the nation, Wyoming is heavily reliant on energy industry taxes.
But with the energy industry hurt by low prices, there's been an effort to look at reforming the state's tax structure. One possible change could be imposing a new gross receipts tax on business transactions.
