There's one football game left on the schedule for almost every team in the 2016 Wyoming High School Regular Season.

Some teams have their playoff spot secured and are waiting to learn which team is their first round opponent.

Others are in the post-season, but don't know yet if they will play at home, or on the road in the first round.

A few teams haven't made it in yet, but are close.

They just need a win, and a few need a win and some help from other teams.

If worse comes to worse, there is a flip of the coin.

The 3-way tie-breaker play-in game has been eliminated from the list of tie-breaking procedures.

In the long run, not only to some teams need to take care of business in week 8, but they have to watch the scoreboard as well, because there are certain scenarios that will determine their playoff fate.

Before going through the scenarios, first an explanation of tie-breakers, according to the Wyoming High School Activities Association:

2-way tie: Use head-to-head result.

3-way tie: If one team beat the other 2 tied teams, or lost to the other 2 tied teams, that team moves up or moves down. Use head-to-head for the remaining 2 tied teams.

3-way tie, all beat each other, and all teams are going to the playoffs: This happens when Team A beats Team B, Team B beats Team C, and Team C beats Team A. The first thing is check record vs. the highest team in the conference, not involved in the tie. If that doesn't work, use the next highest team, next highest, etc...until all teams in the conference not involved in the tie have been checked. If and when a difference is found while going down the standings, that team will move up or move down. Use head-to-head for the other 2 tied teams. If the tie has not been broken, then a 3-way coin flip will be conducted to determine seeding.

3-way Coin Flip: The coin flip can either be done by the teams themselves (coaches and/or AD's will gather at a pre-determined location) or it can take place on Saturday, October 22nd, during the State Cross Country Meet in Sheridan. Representatives from each of the 3 teams will flip their own coin. If all 3 gets heads or tails, then reflip. Once there is 2 heads and 1 tail, or 2 tails and 1 head, the team with the odd flip of the coin is the loser. Use head-to-head for the remaining 2 tied teams.

3-way tie, all beat each other, and at least one team in the tie will end up missing the playoffs: This happens when Team A beats Team B, Team B beats Team C, and Team C beats Team A. The first thing is check record vs. the highest team in the conference, not involved in the tie. If that doesn't work, use the next highest team, next highest, etc...until all teams in the conference not involved in the tie have been checked. If and when a difference is found while going down the standings, that team will move up or move down. If the tie has not been broken, then a 3-way coin flip will be conducted to determine seeding. This means a coin flip will determine which team(s) go the playoffs, and which one stay at home.

4-way Tie: (We believe similar rules are used for a 5-way tie)

If one team beat the other 3, or lost to the other 3, that team moves up or moves down. Revert back to 3-way tie-breaker rules for the remaining tied teams. If that doesn't work, check head-to-head vs. highest team in the conference not involved in the tie. If that doesn't work, use the next highest team, next highest, etc...If and when a difference is found while going down the standings, that team will move up or move down. Revert back to 3-way tie-breaker rules for remaining tied teams. If the 4-way still isn't broken, then there will be a coin flip to break the tie. Details to be announced later.

With the tie-breaker rules covered, let's examine the situations. These are not official and are subject to error.

4A:

Week 8 games that will have an impact on playoff seeding: Cheyenne East at Gillette, Sheridan at Cheyenne South, Natrona at Rock Springs, Laramie at Kelly Walsh.

Week 8 games that will not have an impact on playoff seeding: Evanston at Cheyenne Central.

Gillette and Sheridan: One team will be the #1 seed, the other will be the #2 seed. Gillette won the head-to-head matchup, so the Camels control the tie-breaker.

Rock Springs: Locked into the #3 seed. The Tigers lose head-to-head vs. both Gillette and Sheridan. RS can't get a better seed with a win vs. Natrona, and can't get a worse seed with a loss.

That leaves Cheyenne East (4-4), Laramie (4-4), Kelly Walsh (4-4), Natrona (4-4) and Cheyenne South (3-5) who are all jockeying for seeds 4-8.

Long story short:

East: Can get no worse than #5 seed with a win. Can get #4 seed and a first round home playoff game with win provided BOTH of 2 situations don't happen...Laramie beats Kelly Walsh AND Natrona loses. Can get #5 seed with a loss, provided Laramie beats Kelly Walsh AND Natrona loses AND South loses. Otherwise, the Thunderbirds would drop to #6, #7 or #8 with a loss, and depending on what else happens.

Kelly Walsh: Can get the #4 seed and a first round home playoff game with a win AND an East loss. Can't do any worse than the #5 seed if they beat Laramie. Can drop to #6, #7 or #8 with a loss, and depending on what else happens.

Laramie: Can get the #4 seed and a first round home playoff game with a win AND a Natrona loss. Can do no worse than #5 seed with a win. Will drop to either #6 or #7 with a loss. Can't be #8.

Natrona: Can get the #4 seed and a first round home playoff game with a win AND Laramie beats Kelly Walsh AND East loses. Can't do any worse than #6 with a win and could get #5 or #4, depending on what else happens. Will drop to either #5, #6, or #7 with a loss and depending on what else happens. Can't be #8.

South: Can get the #6 seed with a win AND Laramie beats Kelly Walsh AND East loses. That's the highest the Bison can get. Otherwise, South is either #7 or #8 depending on what else happens. Will be #8 with a loss.

Evanston at Cheyenne Central: This game means nothing as far as the playoffs are concerned. Both teams will miss the post-season.

For 3A, 2A, 1A and 6-Man, Overall Records are NOT used in tie-breakers.

3A East:

Week 8 Games: Buffalo at Douglas, Rawlins at Torrington, Riverton at Lander

Douglas: Secured #1 seed. The Bearcats have head-to-head vs. Torrington. The week 8 game vs. Buffalo means nothing, as far playoff seeding is concerned. They're still the #1 seed, even if they lose to the Bison.

Torrington: Secured #2 seed. Has head-to-head vs. Riverton, but loses head-to-head vs. Douglas. The week 8 game vs. Rawlins means nothing, as far as playoff seeding is concerned. Win or lose, they're still the #2 seed.

Riverton: Has not yet secured a playoff spot. Can secure #3 seed with a win at Lander. The Wolverines can't do any better then that. They lose head-to-head vs. Torrington for #2 seed. Would miss the playoffs with a loss AND if Buffalo wins.

Things get interesting for the #4 seed, because Lander beat Rawlins, Rawlins beat Buffalo, and Buffalo beat Lander.

Scenarios:

Rawlins wins, Buffalo wins, Lander wins: This creates a 4-way tie with the 3-teams and Riverton, who would all be 2-3 in conference. Using record vs. highest team in the conference not involved in the tie, Buffalo gets #3 seed over Lander, Riverton and Rawlins, because the Bison would have a win vs. Douglas, whereas the others don't. Lander gets #4 seed due to head-to-head wins vs. both Riverton and Rawlins. Riverton and Rawlins miss the playoffs.

Rawlins wins, Buffalo wins, Lander loses: Riverton gets #3 seed. Rawlins gets #4 seed over Buffalo, due to head-to-head win. Buffalo and Lander miss the playoffs.

Rawlins wins, Buffalo loses, Lander wins: This creates a 3-way tie for #3, #4 and #5, between Lander, Riverton and Rawlins, who would all be 2-3 in conference. Lander gets #3 seed, due to head-to-head wins vs. both Riverton and Rawlins. Riverton gets #4 seed over Rawlins, due to head-to-head win. Rawlins and Buffalo miss the playoffs.

Rawlins wins, Buffalo loses, Lander loses: Riverton gets #3 seed, Rawlins gets #4 seed. Buffalo and Lander miss the playoffs.

Rawlins loses, Buffalo wins, Lander wins: This creates a 3-way tie for #3, #4 and #5, between Buffalo, Lander and Riverton. Using record vs. highest team in the conference not involved in the tie, Buffalo gets the #3 seed over Lander and Riverton, because the Bison would have a win vs. Douglas, whereas the others don't. Lander gets #4 seed due to head-to-head vs. Riverton, who would miss the playoffs along with Rawlins.

Rawlins loses, Buffalo wins, Lander loses: Riverton gets #3 seed. Buffalo gets #4 seed. Lander and Rawlins miss the playoffs.

Rawlins loses, Buffalo loses, Lander wins: Lander gets #3 seed over Riverton, due to head-to-head win. Riverton would be #4. Rawlins and Buffalo miss the playoffs.

Rawlins loses, Buffalo loses, Lander loses: Riverton gets #3 seed. Rawlins, Buffalo and Lander would have to have a 3-way coin flip. The odd flip of the coin is out. For the remaining 2 teams, whichever one has the head-to-head advantage, gets the #4 seed.

Long story short:

Buffalo: In with a win, but out if BOTH Riverton and Rawlins win as well. If the Bison lose, the only way they make the playoffs is that BOTH Rawlins and Lander lose, and then Rawlins gets the odd flip of the 3-way coin toss.

Lander: In with a win. If the Tigers lose, the only way they make the playoffs is that BOTH Rawlins and Buffalo lose, and then Buffalo gets the odd flip of the 3-way coin toss.

Rawlins: In with a win, AND a Lander loss. If the Outlaws lose, the only way they make the playoffs if that BOTH Lander and Buffalo lose, and then Lander gets the odd flip of the 3-way coin toss.

3A West:

Week 8 Games: Star Valley at Jackson, Worland at Green River, Cody at Powell

Worland and Jackson: Can't make the playoffs. Worland loses head-to-head vs. Cody and Jackson loses head-to-head vs. Worland.

This means Star Valley (3-1), Green River (3-1), Powell (3-1) and Cody (2-2) are in the playoffs. The issue that remains is seeding.

SV beat GR, GR beat Powell, Powell beat SV.

Cody lost to both SV and GR, and still has to play Powell.

Scenarios:

Star Valley wins, Green River wins, Powell beats Cody: This creates a 3-way tie for #1, #2 and #3, between SV, GR and Powell. A 3-way coin flip would be needed. The odd flip of the coin is the #3 seed. Of the 2 teams remaining, the winner of the head-to-head matchup would be the #1 seed, and the loser of the head-to-head matchup would be #2.

Star Valley wins, Green River wins, Cody beat Powell: SV gets #1 seed over GR, due to head-to-head win. GR would be #2 seed. Cody gets #3 seed over Powell due to head-to-head win. Powell would be #4 seed.

Star Valley wins, Green River loses, Powell beats Cody: Powell gets #1 seed, due to head-to-head win vs. SV who would be #2. GR would be #3 seed and Cody would be #4.

Star Valley wins, Green River loses, Cody beats Powell: Star Valley gets #1 seed. A 3-way tie would exist between Powell, GR and Cody. Using record vs. highest team in the conference not involved in the tie, Powell would get the #2 seed, because the Panthers have a win vs. SV, whereas GR and Cody don't. GR gets the #3 seed over Cody, due to head-to-head win.

Star Valley loses, Green River wins, Powell beats Cody: Green River gets #1 seed over Powell, due to head-to-head win. Powell would be #2 seed. Star Valley would be #3 and Cody #4.

Star Valley loses, Green River wins, Cody beats Powell: Green River gets #1 seed. A 3-way tie would exist between SV, Cody and Powell. Using record vs. highest team in the conference not involved in the tie, SV would get the #2 seed over Cody and Powell, because the Braves beat GR, whereas Cody and Powell didn't. Cody gets #3 seed over Powell, due to head-to-head win.

Star Valley loses, Green River loses, Powell beats Cody: Powell gets #1 seed. Star Valley gets #2 seed over Green River due to head-to-head win. GR gets #3 seed, Cody gets #4 seed.

Star Valley loses, Green River loses, Cody beats Powell: This creates a 4-way tie with all 4 teams at 3-2. Using record vs. highest team in the conference not involved in the tie, Green River drops to #4, because the Wolves would have a loss vs. Worland, whereas the others don't. With that established restart tie-breaking procedure. Using record vs. highest team not involved in the tie, Star Valley gets #1 seed over Cody and Powell, because the Braves have a win vs. GR, whereas Cody and Powell don't. Cody gets #2 seed over Powell, due to head-to-head win.

Long Story Short:

Cody will be the #4 seed and travel to Douglas, if the Broncs lose to Powell. Cody could get the #2 seed if things go the right way, but no higher. After that, it's up in the air as to which team is #1, #2 and #3.

2A East:

Week 8 games that matter: Moorcroft at Glenrock, Big Horn at Wheatland, Burns at Newcastle

Week 8 games that don't matter: Mountain View at Thermopolis.

Glenrock: Secured #1 seed. The Herders have head-to-head vs. the Big Horn/Wheatland winner. The week 8 game vs. Moorcroft means nothing, as far playoff seeding is concerned. They're still the #1 seed, even if they lose to the Wolves.

Big Horn at Wheatland: Winner is #2 seed and gets a first round home game. Loser is #3 seed and will travel to Greybull.

Thermopolis: Can't make the playoffs. Since there's an odd number of teams in the conference, one team had to finish conference play before everyone else, and the Bobcats were it. Their conference record of 1-5 will not be good enough to make the post-season. The week 8 game vs. Mountain View is a non-conference game, and has no impact on the playoff picture.

That leaves Newcastle, Moorcroft and Burns to battle for the final spot and a trip to Mountain View.

Burns at Newcastle: If Moorcroft loses vs. Glenrock...the winner of this game is in the playoffs and the loser stays at home. Moorcroft's loss to Thermopolis would come back to haunt.

Moorcroft and Burns both win: There's a 3-way tie with Newcastle for the final playoff spot. Moorcroft beats Burns, Burns beat Newcastle, Newcastle beat Moorcroft. Using record vs. highest team in the conference not involved in the tie, Moorcroft would win the 3-way, because the Wolves would have a win vs. Glenrock, whereas Newcastle and Burns don't.

As far as the final playoff spot is concerned:

Newcastle: Win. Nothing else matters.

Burns: Win and hope Glenrock beats Moorcroft.

Moorcroft: Win and hope Burns beats Newcastle.

2A West:

Week 8 Games that matter: Lovell at Pinedale, Lyman at Kemmerer

Week 8 Games that don't matter: Greybull at Big Piney, Mountain View at Thermopolis.

Mountain View: Secured #1 seed. MV has finished conference play. The Week 8 game at Thermopolis is a non-conference matchups, and the result will have no impact on their seeding. The Buffalos have head-to-head tie-breaker vs. Greybull.

Greybull: Secured #2 seed, and will host the loser between Big Horn and Wheatland. Greybull has head-to-head tie-breaker vs. both Pinedale and Lovell, but loses head-to-head tie-breaker vs. Mountain View. The week 8 game at Big Piney will have no impact on their seeding.

Pinedale: In the playoffs. #3 seed with a win vs. Lovell. #4 seed if they lose to Lovell.

Big Piney: Can't make the playoffs. The Punchers lose head-to-head tie-breaker vs. Pinedale, Lovell and Lyman.

Kemmerer: Can't make the playoffs. The Rangers can't catch-up to which-ever team will be the #4 seed.

That leaves Lovell and Lyman battling for the remaining playoff spot.

Scenarios:

Lyman wins, Pinedale beats Lovell: Pinedale gets #3 seed and will travel to the Big Horn/Wheatland winner. Lyman gets #4 seed over Lovell due to head-to-head win. The Eagles would travel to Glenrock. Lovell misses the playoffs.

Lyman wins, Lovell beats Pinedale: Lovell gets #3 seed and will travel to the Big Horn/Wheatland winner. Pinedale gets #4 seed over Lyman, due to head-to-head win. The Wranglers would travel to Glenrock. Lyman misses the playoffs.

Lyman will miss the playoffs with a loss. If that happens, Lovell and Pinedale are both in, and their game vs. each other is for the #3 and #4 seeds. The winner would travel to the Big Horn/Wheatland winner, while the loser would travel to Glenrock.

Long Story Short:

Lovell: In with a win OR a Lyman loss.

Lyman: Needs a win AND needs Pinedale to beat Lovell.

1A East:

Week 8 Games that Matter: Tongue River at Upton-Sundance, Wright at Southeast.

Week 8 Games that Don't Matter: Lusk at Pine Bluffs.

Tongue River at Upton-Sundance: The winner is the #1 seed and will host the Wind River/Saratoga winner. The loser is the #2 seed.

Pine Bluffs: Secured #3 seed. Even if PB loses to Lusk, the Hornets have head-to-head tie-breaker vs. the Wright-Southeast winner.

Wright at Southeast: Winner is in the playoffs as the #4 seed. Loser misses the playoffs.

Lusk: Can't make the playoffs.

1A West:

Week 8 Games: Shoshoni at Cokeville, Rocky Mountain at Wyoming Indian, Wind River at Saratoga

Shoshoni: Secures #1 seed with a win. The result of RM at WIHS would become irrelevant.

Cokeville: Secures #1 seed with a win AND if Rocky Mountain loses to Wyoming Indian.

Rocky Mountain: Secures #1 seed with a Win AND Cokeville beats Shoshoni AND Shoshoni loses 3-way coin flip. If Shoshoni beats Cokeville, then RM will secure the #2 seed, and their game at WIHS won't matter.

Scenarios:

Rocky Mountain wins, Shoshoni beats Cokeville: Shoshoni is #1 seed and will host the Wright/Southeast winner. Rocky Mountain is #2 seed and will host Pine Bluffs. Cokeville is #3 seed and will travel to the Tongue River/Upton-Sundance loser.

Rocky Mountain wins, Cokeville beats Shoshoni: 3-way tie, and teams will do a coin flip. The odd flip of the coin is the #3 seed, and will travel to the Tongue River/Upton-Sundance loser. Of the 2 teams remaining, the head-to-head winner is the #1 seed and will host the Wright/Southeast winner, while the head-to-head loser is the #2 seed and will host Pine Bluffs.

Rocky Mountain loses, Shoshoni beats Cokeville: Shoshoni is #1 seed and will host the Wright/Southeast winner. Rocky Mountain gets #2 seed over Cokeville due to head-to-head win, and will host Pine Bluffs. Cokeville is #3 seed and travels to Tongue River/Upton-Sundance loser.

Rocky Mountain loses, Cokeville beats Shoshoni: Cokeville gets #1 seed over Shoshoni, due to head-to-head win. The Panthers would host the Wright/Southeast winner. Shoshoni would be the #2 seed and would host Pine Bluffs. Rocky Mountain would be the #3 seed and travel to the Tongue River/Upton-Sundance loser.

Wind River at Saratoga: Winner is in the playoffs as the #4 seed, and will travel to the Tongue River/Upton-Sundance winner. The loser misses the playoffs.

Wyoming Indian: Can't make the playoffs.

6-Man East:
