Wyoming Cowboys Find A 61-46 Win Over Western State

The University of Wyoming Cowboys took care of business Tuesday night, as they dispatched the Western State Mountaineers 61-46 at the Arena-Auditorium.

Wyoming (2-0) used a 22-0 run that helped overcome a slow start. The Cowboys missed six of their first eight shots. They trailed Western State 12-4 with 13 minutes left in the first half. Over the next eight minutes, the Pokes were sparked by their bench and took a lead they never relinquished.

Junior Josh Adams dunk started the spurt. From there, red-shirt freshmen Jason McManamen and Alan Herndon knocked down three 3-pointers. It was punctuated by a monster dunk from Larry Nance, Jr., who capped it with a free throw for a 3-point play.

The Cowboys led 31-25 at half and then steadily built their advantage to 19 points with 6:38 left.

Derek Cooke, Jr. led UW with 13 points. He was a 6-6 from the field and is now 11-11 on the season. Larry Nance, Jr. also had 13 points and 8 rebounds. Charles Hankerson, Jr. chipped in 11 points.

Wyoming shot 52 percent (24-46) from the field. They were only 6-19 (31.6%) on 3-pointers and 7-9 (77.8%) at the line. The Cowboys enjoyed a 34-23 edge in rebounding and had 21 assists. UW also attacked the paint and finished with a 34-14 advantage on points in the paint.

Western State (1-2) made ten 3-point field goals and only seven from two-point range. They shot 34 percent from the field. Dominique Wright scored a game-high 16 points.

The Cowboys will be back on the court Saturday afternoon. They will take on a regional rival in the Colorado Buffaloes. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. in Laramie.
