The Wind River Canyon was reopened to traffic early Saturday, after large boulders and other debris fell onto U.S. 20/Wyoming 789 through the canyon earlier this week.  The Wyoming Department of Transportation says personnel reopened to roadway at 6:45 this morning.

“The canyon looks good this morning, and WYDOT workers will continue to monitor the area for falling rocks,” said to WYDOT area maintenance supervisor Clint Huckfeldt of Thermopolis. “We’re asking motorists to avoid stopping within the canyon for a few days. Please watch for falling rocks and rocks on the roadway.”

Wilson Brothers Construction of Cowley has been working in Wind River Canyon on a project to remove rocks caused by the flooding and mud slides that occurred over the  2015 Memorial Day weekend. After a meeting with WYDOT officials this week, the contractor has also agreed to help WYDOT clean up this week’s rock slides in the next few weeks.

“Neither WYDOT nor the contractor will remove any of the rocks until things are safer, and the cleanup effort will most likely take a couple of weeks to complete,” said WYDOT Maintenance Engineer Lyle Lamb.

WYDOT says most other roadways are now re-opened as well, after a spring snowstorm moved through the state. You can get the latest road information at wyoroad.info, or by calling 511.

“Please drive safely and buckle up,” Huckfeldt said.
