Welker Back At Practice – NFL Roundup
UNDATED (AP) — Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has returned to the practice wearing an oversized flak jacket for protection for his fractured ribs. It was Newton's first practice since Aug. 22, when he had his ribs stepped on during a preseason game against the New England Patriots.
Coach Ron Rivera said last week Newton would be evaluated over the weekend but expected him to play in Week 1 at Tampa Bay.
— Wes Welker celebrated Labor Day by practicing for the first time since sustaining a concussion on Aug. 23. Welker donned his up-sized helmet and ran short routes during the Broncos' 20-minute viewing period open to the media at the start of practice.
— Veteran kicker Ryan Succop (SUHK'-uhp) has agreed to a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans, two days after being released by Kansas City. Succop hit 81 percent of his field goals over his past five seasons, including a career-long of 54 yards. Tennessee opens at Kansas City on Sunday.
— Giants middle linebacker Jon Beason practiced for the first time and hopes to play in the season opener. He's been sidelined since suffering a ligament tear and fractured bone in his foot in June.
