Laramie County Veterans Treatment Court celebrated its first graduation Tuesday.

The program began 18 months ago. Eligible participants who have been charged with low-level, non-violent offenses are diverted from the traditional criminal justice system and moved in the Veterans Treatment Court. The program is similar to drug court and involves assistance and mentoring from fellow veterans, as well as medical care and counseling from the Cheyenne VA Medical Center.

Johnny Campbell Jr., who served in the U.S. Army and National Guard, was the first graduate of the program. Campbell, who was discharged in 2004 said he had anger management issues that led to his arrest.

Campbell said the program helped him focus on what he needed to put first, without stress. Campbell said he really appreciated all of the help he received in the program.
