When University of Wyoming faculty members return to campus this fall, they will find that super computer "Mount Moran" has significantly boosted its capacity for high-performance computing. More than double, in fact.

The University of Wyoming will host the third annual Front Range High-Performance Computing Symposium Aug. 13-15 at the College of Business building.

Six UW faculty members have been chosen to conduct research projects for the "Yellowstone" Super Computer's second cycle of use.

Opportunities for students and the University as a whole were spoken about during a ribbon cutting ceremony at the NCAR Wyoming Super Computer facility in Cheyenne, Monday.

UW student, Jared Baker, has earned his way to a high computing conference in Utah this fall. By virtue of the University of Wyoming graduate student’s win in the poster presentation category at the recent Front Range High-Performance Computing (HPC) Symposium, Baker earned a trip — all expenses paid — to the Supercomputing 12 Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, Nov. 10-16.

NWSC will be home to a public visitor center designed as an educational hub to engage the public and explain the NWSC’s science mission, supercomputing systems, computational science and highlights of the facility’s energy efficient design; and also convey the facility’s scientific and societal benefits.

Chen, a professor of geology and geophysics in UW’s School of Energy Resources, will make history of sorts when he becomes the first UW faculty member to conduct research at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center.
