Squaw Mountain Fire Grows to 8000 Acres

Firefighters continue to battle the Squaw Mountain fire west of Wheatland that began over the weekend.

The lightening sparked fire, about 20 miles west of Wheatland, has burned around 8000 acres of timber and grassland in Platte County.

“Fire crews have had a good handled on the fire today despite the heat and the winds. We are still at %20  containment. There are no evacuations. There have been no road closures. It did get close to Hwy 34, but it never crossed Hwy 34.”

Kathy Lujan, Information Officer for Wyoming State Forestry, says no structures were threatened as of late Tuesday afternoon.

The fire did destroy one cabin and outbuilding over the weekend.

About 200 firefighters aided by a helicopter and tankers are on scene. She says winds are moving the fire to the east.

A second fire north of Wheatland has been confirmed but no information was available as to its size or exact vicinity.

Meantime in northwest Wyoming, about 100 firefighters are fighting a 300-acre fire just west of Dubois that began Monday morning. A small, rural subdivision is nearby, but no one is being forced to evacuate. the fire’s cause is unknown.

Other lightening started fires are burning on the Bridger-Teton National Forest about 25 miles northeast of Jackson and near the Wyoming-Montana border north of Cody.
