Spartans Spoil Homecoming And Beat Cowboys, 27-20 In OT [VIDEOS]

Joe Gray tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Winston in overtime, and that gave the San Jose State Spartans a 27-20 victory over the Wyoming Cowboys Saturday.

The Cowboys failed to match the Spartans on their possession in the extra period. On fourth down and three at the San Jose State 18, Shaun Wick was stopped for a yard loss by the Spartans' Christian Tago that ended the game.

Cowboys head football coach Craig Bohl reflected on the loss to San Jose State.

Wyoming (3-4, 1-2) had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Stuart Williams 46-yard field goal attempt was no good off the right upright.

The Pokes took their first lead of the game on Williams 19-yard field goal with 4:10 left. San Jose State responded with a drive to tie it. The Spartans' Austin Lopez kicked it through from 50 yards with 42 second left.

That drive included a controversial fourth down conversion for San Jose State. Gray completed an 18-yard pass to Tyler Ervin. As Ervin caught it and went to the ground, Wyoming safety Tim Kamana appeared to strip the football.

It was ruled a simultaneous catch, which goes to the offense. Replay confirmed the ruling on the field. It kept the drive alive for the Spartans to tie it.

Even UW head coach Craig Bohl wasn't really wanting to get into the ruling. He did answer about the Pokes last play.

The Cowboys struggled to get much going on offense until the fourth quarter. Their only touchdown through the first three quarters was senior Blair Burns strip and 63-yard fumble return for a score.

Wyoming was held to 277 yards and 11 first downs on offense. Shaun Wick ran for 97 yards, 48 of which came on a t-d run in the fourth quarter. Colby Kirkegaard went 11-of-27 for 119 yards through the air. He was sacked twice. Kamana and Jesse Sampson led the UW defense with ten tackles apiece. Eddie Yarbrough had eight tackles, which included 3.5 tackles for loss with two sacks and a forced fumble.

San Jose State (3-3, 2-1) piled up 477 yards of total offense. Gray went 33-for-45 passing for 322 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also ran for a score. Ervin added 96 yards on the ground. Christian Tago led the Spartans defense with 13 total tackles.

The Cowboys will now try to snap a three-game losing streak, as they prepare for rival Colorado State. The Border War is in Fort Collins next Saturday at 5 p.m.
