Two touchdowns in the fourth quarter helped the Cheyenne South Bison spoil the Laramie Plainsmen homecoming game, 27-21, Friday night at Deti Stadium.

It was South’s first ever win over Laramie in football. The Bison scored the winning touchdown with 34 seconds left on a 1-yard t-d run by Marquez Jefferson.

It was set-up by an unbelievable tipped pass helped South convert on fourth down. With Laramie ahead, 21-19, an incompletion would have given the ball back to the Plainsmen. However, the pass was batted away by Laramie’s Tye Brown, but then snatched out of the air just before it hit the ground by the Bison’s Jake Brown near the sideline.

South (2-4) had pulled within in two, when Austin Barker connected with Michael Debruyn on a 69-yard touchdown pass with 7:30 left.

The teams had exchanged scores in the third quarter. Jefferson converted a fourth and one and busted loose for a 30-yard touchdown. The Bison missed the point after and trailed 14-13.

The Plainsmen responded 53 seconds later. Tristan Eickbush faked a hand-off and ran 83-yards for a score that put LHS ahead 21-13 with 6:54 left in the period.

After that touchdown, Laramie didn’t get much going. They punted twice and turned the ball over on downs after failing to convert on fourth down at the South 32-yard line.

The Bison just kept the ball away from Laramie. They ran 32 more offensive plays than the Plainsmen and held the ball for eight more minutes in the second half.

Jefferson was the star. He ran 39 times for 218 yards and the two TD’s. South out-gained Laramie 441-324 in total offensive yards.

Eickbush ran for 114 yards for the Plainsmen, while Andy Pearson added 89 yards on the ground.

The first half featured five turnovers between the two teams. Laramie scored on a Brown 20-yard interception return in the first quarter. South countered with a 40-yard fumble return for a score. Andy Pearson’s four-yard t-d run in the second put LHS in front 14-7, and that was the score at halftime.

Laramie (2-4) lost three fumbles in the opening half. That included one near the goal-line going in for a score, one on a punt fake that turned directly into a South TD and another after a half-back pass. The pass was caught, and after 54-yard gain, the Bison recovered a fumble on their sideline that stopped momentum for LHS.

The Plainsmen will finish their three-week run against opponents from the city of Cheyenne. They play at the fourth-ranked East Thunderbirds next Friday night. Kick-off from the new Okie Blanchard Stadium will be at 7 p.m.
