Recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or “SNAP”, will be able to use those funds for fresh food purchased at some farmers markets around Wyoming this summer.

Kim Porter, for the Wyoming Business Council says the council is offering financial assistance to markets willing to take the steps necessary to accept SNAP vouchers.

“What we’re trying to do- the Business Council and the Farmers Market Association and the Department of Agriculture- is increase the number of markets that want to accept SNAP at their farmer’s market.”

She says its not simple. Each market must have a dedicated manager. Porter says that’s a challenge, because many of the markets across the state are very small and just getting started.

The farmer’s markets in Casper are not participating, but this summer, markets in Cheyenne, Jackson and Laramie will be.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced they’ll make $4 million in grant dollars available to markets across the country to help cover set up costs necessary to make SNAP transactions possible.
