Should More Logging Be Allowed in Southeast Wyoming? – Survey of the Day

Southeast Wyoming has already seen its share of wildfires, or at least their smoke, over the past month. Dry conditions and gusty winds already make the fire danger higher than many other regions, but throw in the fuel of beetle killed trees and it certainly seems as though southeast Wyoming is ripe for fires to sweep across the land.

Last week, some in the timber industry said there is the potential for a fire even worse than the High Park Fire near Fort Collins to break out in Wyoming and they said it’s because there hasn’t been enough logging. Industry officials are claiming that the U.S. Forest Service and the economy have discouraged them from harvesting dead trees, leaving millions of acres ready to burn.

While logging companies usually thin forests to keep them from getting unhealthy, high fuel costs, low housing starts and according to some in the lumber industry, Forest Service policy have slowed down logging efforts in the region.

Do you agree with those in the timber industry that say logging could help lower the fire danger in the area? Let us know by answering the survey below.
