Two people are dead on the campus of Virginia Tech University.

One University police officer was killed during a routine traffic stop and another person has been confirmed deceased at a nearby parking lot; the shooter remains at large.

Campus officials have determined that at this point, there is no longer a threat to campus.

The shooting occurred shortly after noon eastern, during a traffic stop by a Virginia Tech police officer near McComas Hall.

Witnesses confirm that during the traffic stop, the police officer was shot and killed.

The alleged shooter then fled on foot towards the Cage, a parking lot on campus.  A second person was found deceased at the parking lot.  Police have recovered a weapon at the location of the second individual.

Latest reports describe the suspect as a white male with gray sweat pants, gray hat with neon-green brim wearing a maroon hooded sweatshirt and a backpack and on foot.

At this time, the status of the shooter remains unknown.  Multiple law enforcement agencies are on campus and Virginia State Police has taken over the investigation.

The fallen officer is a four-year veteran of the Virginia Tech police department.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

-Final exams at Virginia Tech were scheduled to begin on Friday, December 9; all Friday exams have been postponed by the University.  Exams will begin on Saturday, December 10.

-Counselors will be on campus from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, December 9 to assist students with any emotional distress.

-A candlelight vigil in the Drillfield on campus is scheduled to occur on Friday, December 9 at 6:30 p.m. EST.

-Blacksburg Transit, the public bus line in Blacksburg was suspended but services have been resumed.
