The stretch run of the high school basketball regular season begins today.

Laramie will take on Cheyenne South in a doubleheader at Laramie High School. It marks the beginning of the second half of 4A East Conference action. The boys' game will be at 5:30 p.m. followed by the girls' game at 7 p.m.

Laramie Plainsmen

The 4A East Conference leading Plainsmen will face the South Bison for the second time in the last three weeks. Laramie defeated the Bison, 47-41, in Cheyenne on January 30.

South was without leading scorer Richard Blackwell in that game. Now the tables have turned, as LHS will be without Jake Aadland tonight.

Plainsmen head coach Chuck Kern said,

"They have the complete advantage. I mean, they have a lot of talent coming back... they have two great scorers in (Michael) DeBruyn and Blackwell... they (South) run a lot of set-ups for those two, so they can get the scoring going."

Blackwell is averaging 16.9 points per game, while DeBruyn is at 13.6.

Kern also said they score a lot in transition.

"They're such a strong team getting out in the passing lanes; really quick, really fast, really aggressive."

Laramie is 4-1 in conference play and 11-4 on the season. South is searching for their first 4A East win, 0-5, and they are 7-9 overall.

Laramie Lady Plainsmen

The Lady Plainsmen begin the second half of league play looking up from the bottom of the 4A East standings.

They'll face a South team that's only conference victory was over LHS two weeks ago in Cheyenne. The Lady Bison won that game 35-20.

Laramie head coach Kyle Stucky said the most important thing is staying positive.

"We continue to come to work every day with an emphasis on getting better. There's some aspects of the game where I feel we're doing that, and obviously there's areas that we gotta continue to address."

Stucky knows there's still a lot to play for down the stretch to position yourself for seeding at the regional tournament.

Tonight will also be senior night for the Lady Plainsmen. Seniors Savannah Cox and Alexis Pickerd will be honored prior to the game.

Stucky said, "I've been real pleased with both (Alexis and Savannah)... the leadership they've brought to the court, in practice and the amount of time they put in in the summer; just their contributions overall to the entire program."

The Lady Plainsmen enter tonight with a 5-11 overall record and 0-5 in conference. South is 7-10 on the season and 1-4 in the 4A East.

The girls get the prime time, 7 p.m., game slot tonight, and Stucky added his team is super excited for that.
