Rockies Slip Past Cubs In 10th – MLB Roundup

UNDATED (AP) — Max Scherzer has racked up his 13th win as he helped the Detroit Tigers end a four-game losing streak.

Scherzer is 13-3 after allowing a run and five hits in seven innings of a 7-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. He carried a shutout into the seventh and won his fifth straight decision as the Tigers maintained baseball's largest division lead. Nick Castellanos (kas-tee-AH'-nohs) crushed a three-run homer while the Tigers scored six times in the first inning to keep their five-game edge over Kansas City in the AL Central.

The Royals halted a two-game skid as Alex Gordon went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in a 3-2 victory against Minnesota. Omar Infante also had three hits and scored in the Royals' three-run sixth.

Oakland still leads the AL West by 2 ½ games following the Athletics' loss in Houston and the Los Angeles Angels' setback in Baltimore. The Astros were 8-1 winners against the Athletics behind the pitching of Dallas Keuchel (KY'-kul), who tossed a four-hitter and tied Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw for the major league lead with four compete games. Robbie Grossman belted a two-run homer to cap the Astros' six-run first.

The Angels were unable to gain ground on the A's as Adam Jones crushed a two-run homer and Kevin Gausman worked seven innings of the Orioles' 4-3 triumph over Los Angeles. The Birds allowed just four hits in maintaining their 2 ½-game lead over Toronto in the AL East.

The Blue Jays won their fifth in a row as Mark Buehrle (BUR'-lee) finally picked up his 11th victory in a 6-1 rout of the Red Sox in Boston. Dioner (dee-AH'-nur) Navarro went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to help Buehrle earn his first win in 10 starts since June 1.

Yovani Gallardo (yoh-VAH'-nee gy-AHR'-doh) gave up just three hits in seven stellar innings as Milwaukee cooled off Tampa Bay 5-0 to end a three-game skid. Martin (mahr-TEEN') Maldonado tied a career high with four RBIs to help the Brewers deal David Price his first loss in seven decisions.

The Rays fell for just the second time in 13 games and failed in their bid to reach the .500 mark for the first time since April.

San Diego ripped St. Louis 12-1 to put the Cardinals 2 ½ games off the NL Central lead. Jedd Gyorko (JUR'-koh) and Will Venable each homered and had four RBIs, while Jesse Hahn limited the Redbirds to a run and four hits in seven innings to improve to 7-2.

San Francisco ended a six-game skid and dropped Pittsburgh two games behind the NL Central-leading Brewers. Chris Stewart's passed ball in the seventh inning brought home the go-ahead run in the Giants' 7-5 win over the Pirates. Gregor Blanco (GREG'-ur BLAHN'-koh) singled home the tying run and was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Los Angeles Dodgers still enjoy a three-game lead over the Giants in the NL West after Matt Kemp's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th gave L.A. a 3-2 win over Atlanta. Kemp also hit a solo shot in the second inning and was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the Dodgers' fifth consecutive win.

Justin Upton tied the game with a solo homer in the ninth before the Braves fell 1 ½ games behind the NL East-leading Nationals.

Washington put together a three-run eighth to beat the Marlins 4-3 and take a 1 ½-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East. Jayson Werth snapped a 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly before Ian Desmond's two-run double gave the Nationals a three-run cushion. Tanner Roark (ROH'-ahrk) allowed one run in seven innings as the Nats ended the Marlins' six-game winning streak.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Corey Kluber scattered three hits in his first career shutout and 11th win of the season as Cleveland silenced Seattle 2-0. Yan Gomes (gohmz) hit a two-run double in the fifth off Felix Hernandez, who retired his first 12 batters before falling to 11-3. Hernandez became the first pitcher in modern major league history to pitch at least seven innings and allow two runs or fewer in 14 straight starts.

— Texas beat the New York Yankees 3-2 behind Colby Lewis, who surrendered two runs and just four hits in seven innings. The Rangers put together a three-run first as Elvis Andrus (AN'-droos) hit an RBI double before Adrian Beltre (BEHL'-tray) and Leonys Martin (lee-OH'-nihs mahr-TEEN') added run-scoring singles.

— Paul Goldschmidt and Didi Gregorius hit two-run homers in Arizona's 5-4 decision over the Reds in Cincinnati. Reds starter Alfredo Simon yielded just two runs in seven innings but came up short in his third attempt at his 13th win of the season.

— Daniel Murphy hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the fifth inning before the New York Mets tacked on five runs in the seventh to crush Philadelphia 11-2. Lucas Duda smacked a two-run shot and Zach Wheeler pitched into the seventh as the Mets took the rubber match of the three-game set.

— Brandon Barnes singled home the tiebreaking in the 10th inning of Colorado's 6-4 verdict over the Cubs in Chicago. Michael McKenry had three hits and an RBI as the Rockies bounced back from Tuesday's 16-inning loss at Wrigley Field.

UNDATED (AP) — There were a couple of trades engineered today involving major league pitchers. The St. Louis Cardinals have picked up right-handed Justin Masterson from Cleveland for outfield prospect James Ramsey, and the Boston Red Sox have dealt left-hander Felix Doubront (doo-BRAHNT') to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named. Masterson has compiled a 4-6 record with a 5.51 earned run average in 19 starts this season, while Doubrant is 2-4 with a 6.07 ERA in 17 games.

— Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Eric Chavez has announced his retirement, ending his 17-year major league career at the age of 36. The lefty-hitting infielder hit .268 with 260 homers and 902 RBIs in 1,615 major league games. Chavez had been on the disabled list since June 9 because of a sprained left knee.
