The Wyoming State Geological Survey has a rare mammal fossil on display this week that was discovered in the Green River Formation near Kemmerer in 2016.

The fossil is the largest known mammal discovered in the Fossil Butte Member of the 50-million year old formation. It will be on display in an open house hosted by the WSGS on the University of Wyoming campus now through Friday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The final day is Saturday, Sept. 29 with viewing hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. From Laramie it will be taken on to the Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne for display in early October. There is an open house at the museum Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

WSGS Director Dr. Erin Campbell joined “Laramie Live on KOWB “radio morning host David Settle for a discussion on this find during the Monday, Sept. 24 show in the video above.

The owner of Warfield Fossil Quarries, Rick Hebdon, collected this rare mammal fossil. The fossilized tapiromorph specimen consists of four large slabs with fossil material encased in rock and a box of smaller pieces. It includes the lower jaw and teeth intact.

Since it was found on a state-leased quarry and due to its rare nature, it was turned over to the state of Wyoming.
