Road and water infrastructure have been the hot topic of discussion around Laramie for years. In the coming months the Laramie Public Works Department is hoping to begin approximately thirty infrastructure projects. It's a step that will greatly improve the quality and efficiency of Laramie's streets and the cities decaying water and waste water lines.

A majority of funding will come from the Specific Purpose Tax that was renewed last May. A number of other projects will also be funded by grants, loans, and enterprise funds. Each one of the projects will have lasting effects on the quality of the city and how it presents itself.

Public Works Director Richard Elliot said the city will attempt to complete as many of the projects as possible during the construction season that runs from April to October. The projects that are not started or won't be completed by the end of the construction season will be continued or started in 2012.

One thing the City of Laramie is hopeful of doing is completing the projects as soon as possible. Inflation and the costs associated with materials and labor could increase and the city wants to have the necessary funds available to complete each of the infrastructure projects.

The first projects scheduled will occur on some of Laramie main roads, such as 15th Street, Sheridan Street, Reynolds Street and 22nd Street. The public should expect delays and some inconveniences. Elliot stated that "For each project, we'll review the traffic control plan and make sure that we do the best not to impact the traveling public for each of the projects."

The main work to be done on the water and waste water infrastructure is to replace old cast iron, concrete and ductile iron pipes. Street work will consist of the reconstruction of roads along with curb and gutter repair which will improve the cities drainage.
