University of Wyoming senior thrower Mason Finley is the lone member of the Wyoming track and field team to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Finley finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 197 feet, 2 inches last Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary meet in Arkansas. He became only the second UW track and field athlete to advance to the national meet since the current qualifying system began in 2010. Only the top 12 finishers in an event move on to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon June 11-14.

Two other Wyoming team members came very close to advancing, but fell short by less than a second.

Graduate student Harry Fisher ended up 15th with a time of 1:49 in the men's 800 meters last Friday. His time put him outside the top 12 by one tenth of a second.

Senior Taylor Gardner also had a close call. She was 18th in the 400-meter hurdles last Friday. Her time of 58.70 was only six tenths away from the final qualifying position.

Of note, junior Paul Thomas finished 16th in the discus with a toss of 179-11. That was just six feet shy of the last spot.

A total of 15 Wyoming track and field team members competed at the NCAA West Preliminary in Fayetteville, Arkansas last Thursday through Saturday.
