Seeking their first outright conference title in 28 years, the Wyoming Cowboys host San Diego State for the 2016 Mountain West Football Championship today.

Wyoming (8-4, 6-2) has never been in this game. In fact, it’s the first post-season game at War Memorial Stadium in its 67-year history. The Cowboys are also playing in their first December home game since 1902.

San Diego State (9-3, 6-2) is the defending MW champs. They defeated Air Force, 27-24, at home in this game last year. The Aztecs are seeking their third title in the last five seasons.

While they are in unfamiliar territory, and Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl can’t speak to the preparation of San Diego State and their head coach Rocky Long, Bohl is confident his team will be ready for this game.

The Cowboys defeated the Aztecs two weeks ago, Nov. 19, in Laramie, 34-33. The thriller came down to a two-point conversion pass attempt. Wyoming defensive back Antonio Hull knocked down San Diego State QB Christian Chapman’s pass that preserved a UW victory. The Aztecs drove 99-yards and scored on the final play of regulation.

Bohl believes this second match will be even more difficult, but he says you’ve got to stay with what got you here.

It’s a match-up of the league’s top scoring offense, Wyoming at 38.2 points per game, against the top scoring defense of San Diego State at 20.8 points per game. It features two of the top four rushers in the country. The Aztecs’ Donnel Pumphrey is No. 2 with 1,909 yards, while the Cowboys’ Brian Hill is fourth at 1,674 yards.

This game will also have 21 players and a coach that earned Mountain West post-season All-Conference honors earlier this week on the field. That includes the conference’s Offensive, Defensive, Special Teams, Freshman and Coach of the Year recipients.

It will be the 37th meeting in the series. Wyoming leads all-time, 19-17.

The Cowboys are trying to become the first team in MW history to be picked last in the preseason poll and win the conference title.

Perhaps a little good news for Wyoming is this will be the fourth MW Football Championship game, and home teams are 3-0. Though, the West has a 2-1 edge over the Mountain Division.

Kick-off is at 5:45 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN.
