A number of famous and important people have made visits to the Gem City over the years. Come this October, one of the most influential world leaders of the 20th century will be coming to speak at the University of Wyoming. Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev will be speaking in Laramie October 14th.

Mikhail Gorbachev will speak Friday October 14th at the University of Wyoming's Arena Auditorium. The event is open to the public and will take place during UW's homecoming weekend.

Previous speakers who have come to UW recently are Bill Ayers, and Anne Coulter, both of which encountered minor controversy from the public when coming to speak. The university is well known around the state for bringing somewhat of a Liberal approach to a conservative and very much republican state. The University has done a great job in promoting both sides of the political spectrum. Bringing Gorbachev to campus will now give the public a glimpse at an international outlook on politics and other topics.

Mikhail Gorbachev previously served as head of state to the Soviet Union. His time as head of state also occurred during the Soviet dissolution in 1991. He also was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.

The event will also include retired United States Senator Alan K. Simpson who will serve as moderator.Adding to the list of Nationally and Internationally renowned speakers, Gorbachev is touted to be one of the most significant personalities to ever speak at the University of Wyoming.
