A 54-year-old man is dead after being struck by a train near Laramie.  Authorities were notified yesterday around 8:45 a.m. of a man injured on the tracks. They found the man about half a mile north of Curtis Street outside of city limits as reported.

According to Albany County Undersheriff Robert DeBree, the man was alive when medical personnel arrived, however his injuries were severe. The man was rushed to Ivinson Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead after en route attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

DeBree says the investigation into the accident is ongoing. However, it is believed that the man was riding the rails and attempted to get off a train when the accident occurred.

Despite a variety of rumors surrounding the circumstances of the accident, a source was able to confirm that the man was not an escaped fugitive. Investigators warn that it is best not to speculate about accidents such as these.

The name of the man has not been released pending family notification. According to Undersheriff DeBree, the man appears to be transient in nature, so locating family has been difficult. DeBree says that the man was known to have been in and out of Cheyenne over the last few years, although it is unclear as to if he or his family is from the area.

An investigation by the Albany County Coroner's Office, Albany County Sheriff’s Office and Union Pacific Railroad is underway. The investigation is expected to be completed next week.
