A Laramie High School student is the second prize winner in a national C-SPAN competition.

C-SPAN announced that Arundathi Nair won second place in their 2018 national StudentCam competition for her documentary “Freedom of Expression is a Human Right- Censorship a Human Wrong.” Nair will receive $1,500 for her documentary and it will air on C-SPAN at 6:50 a.m. Eastern Time and throughout the day on April 6, according to a C-SPAN release. In Laramie, C-SPAN is available locally through Spectrum.  It can also be viewed on the StudentCam website.

C-SPAN has partnered with local cable television providers since 2006 to challenge middle and high school students to produce documentaries about a national issue. This year the theme was “The Constitution & You: Choose a provision of the U.S. Constitution and create a video illustrating why it’s important to you.”

“Congratulations to Arundathi as a second-prize winner in C-SPAN's national StudentCam documentary competition – it’s a terrific recognition,” said Adam Falk, Senior Vice President, State Government Affairs, Charter Communications, in a statement. “This year, C-SPAN's StudentCam contest gave students the opportunity to learn more about and deeply appreciate the U.S. Constitution and its impact on our local community. We are proud to partner with them on this important initiative.”

C-SPAN says it received 2,985 video submissions from over 5,700 students across the nation – a record number. The students produced the documentaries in teams or as individuals and tackled an array of topics, from equality to the powers of Congress.

Nair is among 300 students across the country winning a total of $100,000 including one grand prize winner, four first prize winners, 16 second prize winners, 32 third prize winners and 97 honorable mentions.
