Despite career-highs in scoring from Justin James and Louis Adams, the Wyoming Cowboys lost at Nevada 92-83 Wednesday night.

The Cowboys trailed by three at the break after a back-and-forth first half, 36-33. The Wolfpack opened up a double figure lead twice, but UW never went away. A 9-4 spurt pulled the Pokes within 70-66 at the 6:59 mark.

Wyoming was within 77-73 after an Alan Herndon three-pointer. That’s when Nevada’s Cody Martin made back-to-back three’s. The first went in as the shot clock expired with 3:18 left. After a James lay-up, Cody Martin made another triple late in the shot clock with 2:38 remaining. The Cowboys didn’t recover and lost by nine.

Wyoming head coach Allen Edwards said on the radio broadcast post-game show from Learfield,

“Going on the road you tell your team you need to play near perfect basketball. I appreciated the fight we had tonight, but I thought timely situations in the second half hurt us long term.”

James led the way with 30 points. He made a career best 13 free throws and eight field goals. James is averaging 21.5 points per game in road contests this season. Adams scored 23 for his career-high. That included 9-10 at the foul line, a new career best for made free throw. Adams also had a season-high seven rebounds. Herndon added 12 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Edwards added from Learfield, “Justin James and Louis Adams were really good for this game with their ability to get to the rim and attack I wanted them to put the ball on the floor and attack and with Hayden (Dalton) not being able to play as many minutes it forced Alan (Herndon) to play all 40 minutes, but he did a great job defending the paint.”

Wyoming (10-5, 1-1) shot just 38 percent from the floor. They went 8-27, 30 percent, from deep and had 16 turnovers.

Nevada (14-3, 3-0) stayed tied with Boise State atop the league standings. The Wolfpack shot 43 percent from the field. They were 11-22 from three. Nevada also enjoyed a 45-41 edge in rebounding.

Cody Martin led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Twin brother Caleb added 19 points, while Jordan Caroline contributed 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

The Cowboys return home to face Boise State Saturday at 6 p.m. from the Arena-Auditorium.
