A game-winning shot and a blowout were how Evanston spoiled Laramie’s home debut in high school basketball Thursday.

It was the first game for both schools in the Taco John’s Invitational.

Laramie Plainsmen

Brock Ehlers knocked down an 18-foot jumper from the right wing with 1.1 seconds left, and that gave the Red Devils a 44-42 victory over the Plainsmen.

Laramie (3-4) had a chance to play for the last shot, but a turnover with 10 seconds remaining gave the ball back to Evanston. The Plainsmen squandered a 42-37 lead late.

Jake Aadland led LHS with 21 points. Laramie shot 41 percent from the field, but only 3-for-18 (17%) from beyond the arc.

Evanston (4-4) shot 40 percent and out-rebounded the Plainsmen, 27-20. Ehlers scored a game-high 24 points. He scored 14 of the Red Devils’ 19 points in the second half.

Laramie heads to Cheyenne Friday for their second game of the tournament. The Plainsmen face Kelly Walsh at Cheyenne South High School. Game time is at 2 p.m. The Trojans won the first game last month, 54-40.

Laramie Lady Plainsmen

Emmery Wagstaff scored 21 points to lead the Evanston Lady Red Devils to a 48-30 win over the Lady Plainsmen.

Evanston (3-5) pulled away from Laramie in the fourth quarter. They out-scored LHS 18-3, and the Lady Plainsmen had nine turnovers in the final frame. The Lady Red Devils shot 47 percent and went 11-of-13 at the foul line. They also held a 40-32 edge on the glass.

Laramie (5-2) was led by Lexi Pulley with 14 points, but they struggled from the field. LHS shot 23 percent and made only 1-of-14 from deep.

The Lady Plainsmen will try to bounce back Friday against Kelly Walsh. Tip-off is at 11 a.m. in Cheyenne at South High School. The Trojans won the first meeting a month ago in Riverton, 49-48.
