The Laramie River has reached a level of moderate flood stage. According to the National Weather Service, the moderate flood stage could result in some structures being flooded and some evacuations of people.

The river level is currently at 6.13 feet, and is expected to continue to rise. Flood stage of the Laramie River begins at five feet, and a moderate level begins at six feet. The river is expected to reach 6.7 feet by Friday at noon.

The National Weather Service has some recommendations of actions to take before flooding occurs:

  • Build an emergency kit and make a family communication plan.
  • If you live in an area that has high flood risk, elevate you furnace, water heater and electrical panel if possible.
  • If feasible, construct barriers to stop floodwater.

If a flood does occur, the National Weather Service recommends you take the following actions:

  • If there is a possibility of a flash flood, move to higher ground.
  • If you are told to evacuate, turn off utilities at the main switches or valves and disconnect electrical appliances.
  • Be aware of streams and channels that may flood suddenly.
  • Do not walk or drive through flooded areas and running water.
